Examples of Gamma Spectra for Different Nuclides
Below you can see measured spectra of various radioactive nuclides. The name of each nuclide and the energy(ies) of the characteristic line(s) are indicated in the respective caption. Try to find the peaks in each spectrum based on this information.
Your task at the end of the page will be to identify the nuclides contained in the spectrum of an unknown nuclide mixture.
Co-60 (Cobalt-60)
Gamma spectrum of Co-60 (Cobalt-60: two characteristic lines at 1173.2 keV and 1332.5 keV)
Cs-137 (Cesium-137)
Gamma spectrum of Cs-137 (Cesium-137: one characteristic line at 661.7 keV)
Highly Enriched Uranium
Gamma spectrum of highly enriched uranium - HEU (enrichment level 99%; Uranium-235: characteristic line at 185.7 keV as well as many other lines)
Am-241 (Americium-241)
Gamma spectrum of Am-241 (Americium-241: one characteristic line at 59.5 keV)
Now it's your turn! Try to determine the nuclides responsible for the characteristic peaks in the following measured spectrum based on your previous knowledge. If you are unsure, read the section What information does a gamma measurement provide again.
