What Information Does a Gamma Measurement Provide?

The result of a gamma measurement is a list that indicates how much radiation with a specific energy has been measured. The "amount" of radiation is expressed as the number of impulses.

In-depth:
The "amount" of radiation is referred to as impulses because the radiation hitting the detection system is converted into electronic impulses. These can be counted, for example, by a computer.

 Such a list might look like this:

Table with the measured impulses (right column) at the respective energies (right column). When you browse the list with the slider, you will see significantly higher impulses at various energies than in most other areas.

 

By the way:
Energy is given in units of electronvolts (abbreviated as eV). The unit 1 keV is the same as 1000 eV, meaning it is simply a shortened notation of the value. The same is known when specifying a mass; 1 kg is the same as 1000 g.

Such a table is relatively confusing. Or can you immediately say at which energy the largest number of impulses was measured?

Therefore, it has proven advantageous to present the values of the list in a graph. The following graph shows the values from the above list.

On the horizontal axis labeled "Energy in keV," the individual energy values from the list are provided in ascending order. In this case for energies between approximately 0 keV and approximately 2800 keV. The exact values of the lower and upper limits (46.48 keV and 2788.01 keV) can be found in the table. To maintain clarity, not every energy value is labeled. For each energy value, the corresponding number of impulses is indicated above on the axis labeled "Impulses per channel."

This representation is certainly much clearer than a table, isn't it?
